ALGAE LEATHER
BEING PART OF AN ECOSYSTEM
In the face of the climate crisis, it is important not only to work "less harmful" but climate-positive - to design for people and nature. The textile and fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world. In the production of leather, toxic substances are used that are harmful to humans and the environment. About 17,000 litres of water are needed to produce and process one kilogramme of leather. In addition, the textile industry contributes significantly to the creation of hypoxic zones through eutrophication. In these oxygen-poor zones, life is hardly possible for marine life. SEA LEATHER is a reusable, compostable and animal-free leather alternative made from algae. We use those algae species that, can regulate the nutrient content in the water and thus prevent hypoxic zones. It is a versatile material that can be used to make clothing and accessories and possibly other products.
