ABOUT
We will continue to contribute to the destruction of ecosystems until we are no longer part of this world.
What will survive once humanity is gone?
With(out) Us is an installation by Studio Goos & Brücker exploring the coexistence of human and non-human life forms. Focusing on primordial organisms such as algae, bacteria, and lichens, the project investigates how design and material research can imagine regenerative relationships between species and speculates on futures both with and without humanity. The installation presents two video works.
With Us envisions a future in which humans live in symbiosis with microbial life, co-creating environments and systems of care. Algae serve both as a material for garments and as living agents of bioremediation, absorbing CO₂, filtering pollutants, and supporting ecosystem regeneration. The garments become speculative habitats that integrate microorganisms into the human living environment.
Without Us, imagines a post-human future in which microbial life reclaims the ruins of human civilisation and gives rise to new ecologies beyond human presence. The installation is accompanied by sculptures and sculptural dresses made from compostable biocomposites derived from micro- and macroalgae. Challenging extractive systems of production, With(out) Us explores regenerative, climate-positive approaches to design and invites reflection on care, interspecies collaboration, and the futures that may emerge with or without us.
