There is no rest under capitalism

Apocalypse Fatigue is a short film and multimedia installation exploring human and ecological exhaustion in the age of the Capitalocene.

The protagonist K (Josephine Thiesen) suffers from chronic fatigue and climate anxiety. Overwhelmed by catastrophic news and sleepless nights, she drifts into hallucinations where she encounters coral and algae. Through these surreal encounters, she recognizes a shared condition: exhaustion, stress and systemic exploitation affect all life, not only human.

K eventually slips into a dreamlike post-aquatic world where land and sea begin to blur. There, she becomes part of a symbiotic ecosystem, wearing algae-based garments that respond to their surroundings.

Inspired by Donna Haraway’s more-than-human perspectives, the work imagines forms of coexistence based on care, interspecies kinship and collaboration beyond human-centered systems.

A Separation in Seven Degrees

CORAL:
No, please... I didn't mean it like that. I'll really try this time. Please. I... Look. I'm glowing. Look how I glow. Like I used to... I'm glowing, I'm glowing for you.

ALGAE:
You don't glow the way you used to.

CORAL:
And whose fault is that?

ALGAE:
We've tried for so long. Something has changed. This home doesn't belong to us anymore. I feel like a parasite. Everything I touch falls apart. You're falling apart.

CORAL (whispering):
But...If you leave, then-

ALGAE:
I know. I don't think there's anything left for us here.

As insomnia pulls K deeper into a hallucinatory state, she overhears the final conversation between a coral and its symbiotic algae. Their intimate breakup gradually reveals itself as an allegory for coral bleaching, a quiet ecological catastrophe, reimagined as a story of love and the loss of a shared home.
